Claude Code alternatives compared

Official Claude Code, OpenRouter, Cursor, Copilot, and AI in IDE compared on price, models, and workflow, and when each is the wrong choice.

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool: it reads a repository, edits files, runs commands, and works from a terminal, an IDE extension, a desktop app, or the browser. It is not the only way to get a strong coding model into your editor. The options below differ less in "which model answers" than in what you are buying — a seat on a subscription, credits against an API, or a routed API key.

AI in IDE is an independent third-party service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or resold by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Cursor, GitHub, or OpenRouter. All product names below belong to their owners, and every price was read from the vendor's own page on 1 November 2026.

TL;DR

  • Official Claude Code is the most complete Claude experience: subscription login, browser and desktop surfaces, scheduled and cloud sessions, MCP, hooks, subagents. It is also the least flexible on price if you only want a model in your editor.
  • OpenRouter is the broadest model catalog behind one API. Pick it when the model itself is the variable, or when you need multi-provider failover and centralized spend control.
  • Cursor and GitHub Copilot sell an integrated editor experience with a fixed monthly allowance. You get their workflow, not a raw API.
  • AI in IDE sells quota you spend across Claude, GPT, and Gemini through separate key channels, configured into tools you already run — Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, and IDE extensions. It is a cost and account-consolidation play, not a new editor.
  • Compare your expected monthly API spend, including fees, with the subscription price for the same workload. Pay-as-you-go often costs less for light or occasional use.

Official Claude Code

Claude Code is available on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise plans, and separately through the Anthropic Console with pay-as-you-go API billing. The terminal CLI, VS Code, and JetBrains integrations also accept third-party providers — Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform, Microsoft Foundry — and any LLM gateway you point at with ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL.

That last detail matters: Claude Code is designed to talk to a gateway. Anthropic documents both LLM gateway configuration and enterprise deployment options, so routing it through a third-party endpoint is a supported pattern rather than a hack. What you give up by leaving the subscription is the parts that are not the model: web sessions, the desktop app, scheduled tasks, remote control, and Anthropic's own usage allowances.

List prices on claude.com/pricing: Pro $20 per month billed monthly ($17 per month equivalent on annual billing), Max $100, Ultra $200, Team standard seat $25 monthly or $20 annual, Team premium seat $125 monthly or $100 annual. Prices exclude tax and change at Anthropic's discretion.

Choose it if you want the full Claude surface area, your organization standardizes on Anthropic billing, or you need compliance features tied to an Anthropic contract.

OpenRouter

OpenRouter is a router, not an editor. One API key reaches a large catalog of models from many labs, and its default routing weighs effective price, throughput, time to first token, rate limits, reliability, and tool-call quality per request. Errors fall back to another provider automatically, and an errored attempt is not billed for model tokens.

Pricing is pass-through: you pay each provider's list rate, and OpenRouter charges a platform fee when you buy credits (5.5% Standard, 8% Business per its pricing page). Bring-your-own-key usage has a monthly list-price allowance, then a 5% fee. For Claude Code specifically, OpenRouter exposes an Anthropic-compatible endpoint and documents the environment variables — with the explicit caveat that Claude Code is only guaranteed to work with Anthropic's first-party provider.

Choose it if you need many models, per-provider routing controls, or a single invoice and activity log across vendors. Skip it if you want a curated three-vendor setup and would rather not reason about provider selection at all.

Cursor

Cursor is a VS Code-derived editor sold as part of a subscription that also bundles Grok and X. Its paid tiers — $8 Plus, $30 Premium, $100 Super, $200 Ultra per month — include a weekly usage pool for Cursor's own models; third-party models such as Claude, GPT, and Gemini are not in that pool and are billed at API list price from prepaid credit, available on Premium and above. Cursor also lets you paste your own OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure, or AWS Bedrock keys, in which case the provider bills you directly.

The thing Cursor sells is the integrated experience: tab completion, agent mode, cloud agents, code review. A routed API key does not reproduce that, and Cursor's subscription is sold only directly — its own documentation states it does not authorize resellers, so any third party offering "cheap Cursor" is not something we would recommend.

Choose it if you want one editor with the agent built in and are comfortable with a fixed seat plus usage pool. Skip it if you already live in VS Code or JetBrains and only need the model.

GitHub Copilot

Copilot is priced per seat with a monthly AI credit allowance: Pro $10, Pro+ $39, Max $100, Business $19 per granted seat, Enterprise $39 per granted seat. The model list is curated per plan and administrators can restrict it. Copilot is a managed service: its documentation covers enabling it in supported editors and choosing among the plan's models, not supplying a custom base URL or a third-party gateway, so treat it as a workflow alternative to Claude Code rather than a channel you can route.

Choose it if your team already runs on GitHub and wants procurement, policy, and audit in one place. Skip it if model choice or per-token cost control is the reason you are looking around.

AI in IDE

AI in IDE is a third-party gateway with separate key channels for Claude, GPT, and Gemini. You buy quota once, create a key on the channel you need, and point an existing client at it:

  • AWSQ / CCMAX — Anthropic Messages at https://api.aiinide.com, or OpenAI-compatible at https://api.aiinide.com/v1, for Claude Code and Anthropic SDKs.
  • Codex — https://api.aiinide.com for the Codex CLI and Responses API clients.
  • Gemini — https://api.aiinide.com for the Gemini CLI and generateContent clients.

Channels change how fast quota is consumed (AWSQ 0.8×, CCMAX 2×, Codex 0.8×, Gemini 0.5×), not how much quota you bought. Model coverage is deliberately narrow: Claude models on the Claude channels, GPT/Codex models on the Codex channel, Gemini Flash models on the Gemini channel. Fable is offered on CCMAX but not on AWSQ; Mythos is not offered on any channel. Setup means environment variables or a settings file — the guides walk through it, but nothing here installs itself, and an extension that reports missing configuration is telling you the variables did not reach the process.

Choose it if you already use Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, or a compatible extension, want one balance across vendors, and your work fits the supported model list. Skip it if you need frontier models outside that list, contractual SLAs, or an officially supported vendor relationship.

Comparing prices honestly

Three billing models are being mixed above, and the comparison only makes sense if you convert them:

  1. Seat price (Claude Pro, Cursor, Copilot) is capped but not metered; heavy days hit limits rather than invoices.
  2. Pass-through per-token (OpenRouter, Cursor prepaid credit, Anthropic Console) tracks usage exactly, plus any platform fee.
  3. Purchased quota with multipliers (AI in IDE) is prepaid and predictable, but different models burn it at different rates, so a "tokens included" number is not comparable across channels.

A defensible estimate needs your own numbers: input tokens, output tokens, cache reads, and how often you hit long-context pricing. Statements that one option is "N× cheaper" without those figures are marketing, including ours.

Every price, included allowance, and channel multiplier on this page varies by vendor, model, date, and volume. A third-party page may have changed before we updated this one, so treat the linked vendor pages and your own invoice as authoritative.

FAQ

Is AI in IDE an official Claude Code product?

No. AI in IDE is an independent third-party gateway. Claude Code is Anthropic's product; we provide an Anthropic-compatible endpoint that Claude Code can be configured to use. There is no partnership, endorsement, or reseller relationship, and Anthropic support will not cover configuration made here.

Can I keep my existing Claude Code setup?

Usually, yes. Claude Code reads ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN from the environment or from ~/.claude/settings.json. Changing those two values moves the requests; your CLAUDE.md, MCP servers, hooks, and permissions stay where they are. Remove the variables to go back to a subscription login.

Does OpenRouter work with Claude Code?

Yes, and its documentation covers the setup, but with a caveat the docs state plainly: Claude Code is only guaranteed to work with Anthropic's first-party provider, and the same page recommends pinning Anthropic first if you route through OpenRouter. Treat non-Anthropic routes as best-effort.

Which option is cheapest for light use?

For API access alone, $3 of monthly usage costs less than a $20 monthly seat. The seat breaks even when the cost of the usage it covers reaches $20. Consider any editor features you need separately.

Do any of these give me Fable or Mythos?

It depends on the plan. Anthropic lists Fable for Pro as paid with usage credits, and includes it on Max and Ultra within weekly limits. On AI in IDE, Fable is available through the CCMAX channel and not through AWSQ, and Mythos is not available on any channel. Check the model list for your own key with GET /v1/models before you commit.

What happens if I outgrow the quota?

You can top up or move plans; the purchased quota is shared across requests made with the key. There is no automatic overflow into an official account, so a request that exceeds remaining quota fails rather than silently billing someone else.
